The Vampire Diaries is a series of supernatural horror young adult novel series by L.J Smith, that was published between September 1991—1992, then was rebooted in February 2009.

The series follows the life of Elena Gilbert, a senior in high school who recently lost her parents over the summer. She meets a foreign exchange student, Stefan Salvatore, who she is instantly attracted to. She discovers that Stefan is a vampire and is in a competition with his older vampire brother, Damon, to win her heart. The two brothers are attracted to Elena because is a doppleganger of Katherine Von Schwartzchild, a vampire who the Salvatore brothers fell for in the 15th century, who is also responsible for turning the brothers into vampires in the first place. When Elena and Stefan begin a relationship, Elena is opened to the world of the supernatural which includes werewolves, witches, ghosts, kitsunes, psychics, demons and angels.

In 2009, the series was turned into a TV show that aired on Thursdays on The CW by the same name. The first episode aired on September 10, 2009. In May 2011, The Vampire Diaries was renewed for a fourth season to begin on October 11, 2012 and run for 23 episodes.

Adaptions[]

On February 6, 2009, The CW announced that The Vampire Diaries was premiering the following September. On May 19, 2009, the Pilot was officially ordered by The CW for the 2009-2010 season.

Filming began in July 2009 in Vancouver, British Columbia, but shooting was relocated to Covington, Georiga for the rest of the series. The pilot introduces characters Elena Gilbert, played by Nina Dobrev, Stefan Salvatore, played by Paul Wesley, Damon Salvatore, played by Ian Somerhalder, Bonnie Bennett, played by Katerina Graham, Caroline Forbes, played by Candice Accola, Jeremy Gilbert, played by Steven R. McQueen, Matt Donovan, played by Zach Roerig and Jenna Sommers, played by Sara Canning. The pilot episode officially premiered on Thursday, September 10, 2009 at 7/8c on The CW and reeled in 4.91 million veiwers.

In May 2010, The CW announced that The Vampire Diaries had been renewed for a second, 22-episode season. The following May, it was announced that the show had been renewed for a third season, and later a fourth season on May 10, 2012, which is set to premiere on October 11, 2012 and run for 23 episodes.
